Bringing Home Your New Bully Baby... How to Be Prepared for Your New Life Together

Queen Moxie Mia

Bringing home a new Bully Baby is just like bringing home a human baby, except guess what… they already know how to walk, run, chew and get into trouble!  So, BEFORE you bring home your Bully Baby… GET PREPARED!  It is so important to start your lifelong commitment off on the right foot.

Bully Baby Check List

√ Veterinarian - General Vet, Holistic Vet & Vet Dermatologist
Ask your friends, family, bully groups or clubs for references.  Interview from your short list of vets and choose the one you like.  *It’s important if you take your bully with you around town to have a second Vet on the other side of town in case you have an emergency.* Driving 20 miles in a 911 situation is not something we suggest.  Two Vets, opposite sides of town will ensure you are always close to medical help.

√ Pet Insurance
Start their program as soon as you get your bully.  Shop prior to choosing your bully and receive multiple quotes.  Bullies require constant medical care but PI can save your bank account!

√ Bully Bank Account
Yes, you read it right!  You should have a savings account started with a minimum balance of $500.  This is for emergency services, illness, scheduled surgeries (if needed), insurance deductibles or anything pertaining to the bully’s needs that your regular budget can’t afford.  Remember, bullies are coveted breeds.  They need attention throughout the day like a human child.

A good rule: If you can’t afford to BUY the bully, you can’t afford to properly CARE for the bully!  So research each bully breed before you choose your breed.  If not, you are only contributing to kill shelters, neglect and the ruin of the bully.  Be Bully Smart!

√ Pet Store
Local or online that carries bully specific items from facial cleaning items to bully tough toys.

√ Baby Proof your House and Backyard
No escapes, no poisonous plants, no sharp obstacles, nothing your bully might chew and get sick on.

Bully Baby Shopping List

√ Food and Water Bowls
Stainless steel is a good choice because glass can break, plastic can be chewed up and can harbor bacteria.

√Elevated Feeders & Water Dishes
Helps digestive systems and is the best way to feed your bullies, and they can't push it around while eating.  Some come with “growth” legs so they can be raised as they grow.

√ Adjustable Harness, Collars and a Leash
It’s best to buy the “cheaper”    accessories to train your puppy.  They chew or rebel these items at first. Once the puppy is at least a year old, you can purchase the higher end/fancy accessories you know they won’t chew.

√ Crates and Pens
Dogs are "Den" animals.  Create a safe haven, a place to keep your baby away from the hazards in your home (electrical cords, plants, furniture).  This is also a safety when you leave the puppy for a time as it protects the bully from serious injury, eating your trash, chewing electrical cords, peeing/pooping throughout the house. Just prepare to purchase another one when the bully grows to adult size.

√ Cleaning Supplies
Paper towels, baby wipes, enzyme remover for potty accidents and crate cleaning, 100% cotton pads for ears/drying face folds are all important to have on hand.  Budget this into your funds as you will need plenty for the first year!

√ Bath Towels
Soft cotton towels are the best to fill the crate.  They are machine washable, reusable and economical during potty training.

√ Beds and Blankets
You will want something that is machine washable.  Remember they will grow quickly so you don't want to buy the cute baby size, plan ahead or you will be spending a lot more money.

√ Toys
BEWARE, make sure they are DOG TOYS!  Big enough and NO children's toys as the eyes and stuffing can be a CHOCKING HAZZARD.  Make sure that they cannot swallow it. Chew toys are essential for teething and to protect your furniture.  We suggest the freezer bones: (wet with tap/bottled water, put in freezer for 20 minutes, let puppy chew/teethe safely, repeat when warm), available online or local chains. Never leave puppy unattended with stuffed/squeaker toys-dangerous.

√ Food
You will want to find out what they have been fed and wean them off gradually. Your Vet can instruct you how to accomplish changing their food.  Buy the best you can afford to give them the best nutrition to promote the best health.

√ GROOMING
Tooth brush and bathing aides, soaps, toe nail trimmers, quality shampoos/conditioners, evaporating cleaners for eyes, ears, butts and face folds is a MUST. Also, find a really good groomer.  Bullies are a special breed and have special care needs.  You will need to clean their folds regularly throughout the day, each day.  Starting the bully with teeth brushing is important.  The "short nose" bullies can have complications with any regular surgery such as dental cleanings or spay/neuter, so brushing their teeth at least once a week will keep their gums and teeth healthy and avoid such procedures if you can.

√ TRAINING
As soon as you get your bully baby home, it’s training time!  In your home, the basic commands: sit, stay, down, leave it, go, off and of course, NO should be taught. If you don’t know how to train, it’s best to hire a quality trainer to work with baby IN YOUR HOME.  Being the pack leader is extremely important from the moment you meet.  Everyone in your household and all visitors must use the same commands and respect YOUR rules.  If not, the baby will take over from confusion causing everyone unhappiness!  Need a good trainer? Just ask us!

√ EXERCISE
Just because you can’t take your baby OUT, doesn’t mean you are to ignore his needs for exercise.  Mental exercise is provided through training & teaching him commands.  Physical exercise is puppy play time controlled by YOU, training him to walk on the leash properly IN THE HOUSE and introducing him to his “safe haven” the crate or the pen.  Consistency is key and patience is required!  Your puppy will be tired from these exercises and fulfilled.  YOU will be happy, in control and your bully will reward you with affection for being a great pack leader!

Bully Baby No-No List

X DON'T take your new baby to the dog parks or socialize around other dogs until two weeks AFTER they have completed their shots.  We know it's hard not to show off your new baby, however, your bully can become ill!  They haven’t finished their vaccinations to protect their immune system.  Family should also repeatedly wash their hands before and after handling the puppy.  Not following this rule can result in death or serious and costly emergency services. Take a lot of photos and share on your social media pages!

X DON’T NO RAWHIDES EVER!!! Rawhides do not digest and can only cause major problems and expensive vet bills. Bullies already have special bodies that need constant attention.  This includes “bully sticks” and “greenies” as per breed experts.  Try the fruits/vegetables as treats (while supervised).  If you need the Safe List, just ask us!

X  DON’T WEATHER:   Bullies CAN NOT HANDLE HEAT because of their short snouts, the cooling agent in a dog, they can suffer brain damage and even death QUICKLY… Please be careful with a bully.  They can NEVER LIVE outside while you are at work or away from your home.  Bullies are also sensitive to COLD temperatures.  Protect your baby from all climates properly!

X DON’T  LEAVE UNATTENDED!!! Bullies GET STOLLEN!!!   Bullies are NOT backyard dogs, ever!  They do get stolen from owner’s yards, in cars while owners are doing errands and even at dog parks when you’re on your cell phone or chatting with another person.  So, pay attention, be over protective on this issue.

DON’T let strangers take photos of your bully without permission FIRST!  This is another way to identify you/your bully and steal your dog! Always keep your eyes on your bully.

We educate our Bully Nation to help the breeds live a long fulfilled life with great bully families.  Not everyone can have a bully, but if you do, we vow to help you through the good & the bad times.  We are here to help you be the best bully family, just contact us at info@boanddeemo.com with your questions!

Congratulations on your Royal Bully Baby! Remember to post pictures on our Facebook wall www.facebook.com/BoAndDeeMoNation to brag and share!

Magical Medicine of Bulldogs, My Lupus Story

February 1, 2003, I woke up screaming at the top of my lungs from a dead sleep.  I looked down to find that my whole body had swollen by about 30 pounds!  I couldn't move without excruciating pain nor could I be touched without screaming!  This day changed my life forever.

I had to borrow prescription pain drugs just to get through the day.  I couldn't walk, so I would lean against walls and slowly slide sideways to reach the bathroom or living room.  I refused to have any help with bathing, so it took 2-3 hours just to take a shower.  I could not even lift my arms to wash my face or hair, and forget about bending to shave my legs!  All the daily things that I took for granted were now my worst nightmare.

Three months of screaming and struggling to get through a 24 hour period and I was done with the torture.  No doctor would help since I was freshly divorced and left with no health insurance to help pay for treatment.  Nurses over the phone told me, "It sounds like MS! But we can’t help you."  I was exhausted and couldn’t live the rest of my life in this torture.

I was living with my parents in May 2003, I told them I needed to talk with them first thing in the morning.  I said, "I can’t do this anymore!  I just can’t be tortured like this and not have any doctor willing to help me.  I've decided to commit suicide today but it's not your fault, I just don’t want to be in pain anymore."  I had never experienced such horrible pain before and never in a million years did I think these words would come out of my mouth.

I woke up to find almost 2 days had passed, but I was in my bedroom, in my own bed.  I had passed out from standing too long while speaking with my parents apparently.  Next thing I know, my Dad comes in and gets me up to take me to a doctor, still wearing my pajamas as it was physically too much to get changed at this point.

A few days later the doctor's office called.  The nurse was in tears,   "I am so very sorry Dee.  I was hoping to have better news for you.  You definitely have Rheumatoid Arthritis, the worst case we've seen in a very long time.  But unfortunately, you also have Lupus."  She went on to tell me, “It's a deadly disease, but we’re getting you to a specialist and we've sent over a prescription to be filled to get you out of pain quickly."

I didn’t really know what either disease entailed, but I had heard of Lupus being deadly.  All I could think was that life was over as I knew it.  I mean, how was I going to take care of myself?

After meeting the specialist, he gave me his recommended treatment, traditional Chemotherapy!  I just thought that was crazy so with a lot of research and time with the doctor, Oral Chemotherapy treatment was the best route for me to take.  I also started a juicing regimen of fruits and vegetables for the holistic medicine.  The next day after starting the medicine, I could walk; still with pain, but nothing like before.

Two weeks after I began to walk again and return to a more normal physical state, my Father began to show signs of illness.  It looked as though he had a stroke during the night, his speech was slurred and he just didn't look right.  We took him to the hospital to find he had over a dozen brain tumors and multiple lung tumors which were protruding from his body.  Eleven days in hospice and he just went to sleep.

Six months after my Father passed away my Mother had a stroke.  She was partially paralyzed.  She couldn't walk and was now bed ridden for me to take care of.

Stress, a major factor with my new diagnosis followed as I was the chosen one to put funeral arrangements together, memorial service and everything else that comes with losing a family member.  Although I experienced the short set back with my health, I slowly bounced back to remission.

Dealing with the unknown was one thing, but now that I was diagnosed, my life and world was changed forever!  I had been an extreme athlete, snowboarding, kickboxing, hockey, watercrafts, dabbled on the drum set to list a few.  I could no longer do those things and begun to feel lost and depressed.

After moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 2005, I rescued another Boxer from Death Row.  A beautiful boy named Rocky.  A six week training program and he was ready to go to his forever home!  My husband and I wanted to keep this guy, but it seemed the last abusive owners used cats to rile him up to be a fight dog.  We couldn't put our cats in jeopardy, so we found Rocky the perfect family.  I was home bound since we moved to our new home.  2005 was a growing year for me, new city, new people, moving and living with Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis.  But I did rescue a few Boxers from death row and found that training and exercising these dogs really benefited MY health.  Saving lives of death row dogs was beneficial for all.  I was pretty depressed when Rocky left us so I told my husband, "I want a Bulldog now, not to fix anything, but an English bulldog would be great for our family."  He couldn't believe his ears.  I wasn’t aware the English Bulldog was sought out by so many as the “dream dog”.

We already had the Maltese girls, Bonnie Blue and Bella Boo, AKA the BB Girls. My husband, Kevin and I got the BB Girls for my Mother.  She wanted constant K9 contact.  We surprised her with TWO Maltese sisters.  Her doctors felt the dogs were the reason for my Mother living so many years in her unhealthy state.

Saving Boxers and helping to find great homes got me out of the house for dog walks; I met surrounding neighbors, joined a dog group for play dates, started my own community senior citizen dog training program and found my body was getting stronger by taking care of Rocky’s needs! Who knew!?!

So in 2007 I found Mugsy Malone.  This beautiful red and white English Bulldog puppy with a full black mask all wrinkled and fat.  It was over for me… I fell in love instantly.

As a responsible dog owner, I made sure we did our daily exercise in the pack, fed him the best food and gave him the best veterinary care I knew.

But what this bully gave me was priceless and an amazing control over my disease!  Mugsy Malone and the BB Girls gave me my life back, a life that I thought was over.

After a year, I was running each day with my dogs, my Lupus was mostly in remission and I found I was having more good days than bad.  My doctors were amazed and noted I was a "Medical Miracle."  I shared my holistic juicing diet with my doctors and anyone who asked!  No one believed I had Lupus with my energy level.

I call Lupus the "invisible disease", most people don't look sick; therefore people don't know what you go through with pain, rashes, scarring, hair loss to name a few.  Even with my new husband that I had married in August of 2004, Kevin, my best friend, it was a struggle for us. Because I didn’t look sick, it was hard for him to relate or even help.  I felt like a teacher schooling this man about how I felt every day and using descriptive words to describe the pain so he could relate.  Lupus can destroy relationships and has destroyed marriages.  I’m thankful; my marriage is healthy and very supportive of my daily dealings with Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis.

My choices worked for me.  Finding the best doctors who listened to ME, the holistic diet and definitely bringing a pack of dogs into my life has added that missing X Factor to make my life meaningful and loving.  Medicine helps us cope, but the dogs mend our hearts and souls.  I’ve always had pets in my life since childhood, but I never knew the healing powers until I became sick.  Dog companions are miracle workers and can bring your life into perspective.

Interesting enough, Bo & DeeMo was born due to Mugsy Malone, and then we added our baby girl, English Bulldog Moxie Mia* to the pack and the Queen of Bo & DeeMo.  Together, Mugsy and Moxie are the faces of our Company.  They are on television performing runway shows, modeling and bringing much joy and positive education to Bully families across the world.

I had to train our entire pack for such disabilities, hospital equipment so they are sensitive to fragile people like my Mother and me.  Four out of the six dogs we have are Therapy teams and to date, I have chosen one to be my service dog.

Ironically, Brandi, Co-Founder of Bo & DeeMo has been diagnosed, Kristin, Events Coordinator, Sharon our Executive Assistant to name a few all diagnosed with Lupus and surrounding autoimmune diseases.  It was by chance we found each other, but the connecting factor comes back to the Bulldogs!

The company of Lupus, Bo & DeeMo knows first-hand what it takes to beat and live with Lupus and other autoimmune diseases.  We band together to make each others lives easier and support each other through the bad days, but in the end, the best miracle medicine is our dogs!  Bulldogs or any other breed.

Moxie Mia passed away March 21, 2012 in recovery from surgery complications.  I dedicate this to our baby bulldog who left us so soon at 2 years old.  Our lives will never be the same, but her royal position will always be remembered and loved by all.  Dee Mounts, Bo & DeeMo

B & D's First Aid Class at Park Animal Hospital..being informed is the best prevention!

Brandi Co-Owner of Bo & DeeMo

Packed Class
At any time your dog could incur any type of wound or need emergency care. Bo & DeeMo understands this and wanted to make sure that their fans and bully parents, animal owners, pet industry workers, rescues workers and foster parents had the opportunity to learn First Aid for both canines and felines. On Sunday July 17 from  12:30pm - 4:30pm the second Bo & DeeMo first aid class was held at Park Animal Hospital. Bo & DeeMo’s Co-Owner Brandi was on hand to take the course and answered any questions regarding Bo & DeeMo.

Model CPR Dogs
Many important topics were covered such as how to fashion an emergency muzzle from what you have handy. Plus traveling with your pet, good nutrition and of course mouth to muzzle CPR! Students practiced on special first aid stuffed models.

Jinny the American Red Cross First Aid instructor was informative and answered questions from the class, questions such as how to be prepared in case of emergency evacuations natural disasters, what should be in your first aid kit and more. For a total cost of $51 which went directly to the AMR students learned valuable life saving techniques.  After the students completed the four hour course they earned a CPR certification.
Jinny from ARC and Park Animal's Chloe

Bo & DeeMo Reach Out to the Rescue/Animal Community

It’s summertime in Las Vegas!  Which can only mean one thing, on some days the temperature is well over 100 degrees and for dogs that is not a healthy environment.  Bo & DeeMo decided to tackle some of the issues which affect all breeds. First on the calendar was the "Working Together to Empower the Community" luncheon which was held at one of Las Vegas’s newest favorites Born and Raised or BAR for short.

We were very fortunate to work with BAR www.BornAndRaisedLV.com. Ali and Scott Godino Jr. were on board from the minute the two words “animal rescue” were mentioned. Chef Donald Hoffman’s offerings from the kitchen were out of this world! Rescues operate on shoestring budgets and what BAR put together for a total price of $10 per person was amazing. Rescues such as FUPI (Foreclosed Upon Pets, Inc., Best Friends, Adopt A Rescue Pet, Colossal Canine Care and more dined upon homemade pizza, wings, pinwheels and the Le Croque, ham and Swiss topped with a fabulous cheesy béchamel sauce.  Attendees also enjoyed BAR’s Classic Angus Beef Sliders which had sautéed onions and American cheese.  BAR believes in supporting the animal community and their patio is dog friendly. So when the weather cools down, bring your dog, hang out and enjoy. Cindy Godino spoke briefly and reiterated to the luncheon attendees. “We are so very happy that you are all here. Please feel free to contact us any time for any events. We are most definitely animal lovers and community supporters.”  Another perk of BAR, if you are Born and Raised in Las Vegas bring in your birth certificate and receive a 10% off every purchase card.

During the luncheon Dr. Caroline O’Sullivan www.holisticvetservices.com who specializes in holistic care for pets was the key note speaker. She spoke about the quality of food and care which are important for our pets. She also specializes in acupuncture and laser therapy. Her talk centered on the alternatives that our available other than prescribing medication.
“Never give up! Whatever it is and western medication says I’m sorry that is all we can do for you, remember there are other alternatives. Pain management is a large part of my practice. You can find things down at Whole Foods that can add to the quality of life and diet to your pet.”

“Plus remember you are your pet’s only advocate! Don’t believe everything you find on the internet. Be informed on the alternatives. Remember all medication started from a plant somewhere! It is not easy and it takes time to practice this type of alternative, but it can be a healthier option for your pet.”

Her biggest message for the rescue community?  How do we let people know about these alternatives?  Dr. O’Sullivan recommended that people reach out her with questions and concerns. Colossal Canine Care volunteered that Dr’ O’Sullivan has worked with many of their dogs with massage therapy and Reiki which has made a huge difference in some of the joint, skin problems these dogs face.

Bo & DeeMo www.boanddeemo.com at the beginning of the luncheon handed out a questionnaire for the different rescue organization attendees to look over and answer.
Information for Attendees

Some of the most important issues that came up were:

1. Holding pet owner’s responsible for their actions. Many pets are abandoned and the rescues end up rescuing and attending to their medical needs.

2. Back Yard Breeders breed irresponsibly and sell their animals through ads. Then when they are done with them they abandon or turn into the rescues. Once again this causes vet bills.

3. The fee that fully funded animal shelters charge for the breed specific or charitable rescues to pick up a dog. A large portion of these dogs are older and have specific health problems, so once again vet bills are wracked up.

4. Make sure that your pet is included in your will or trust. This will insure that they are taken care of for the duration of their life comfortably and safely.

5. Educating the young thru public school speaking. If a child begins to understand that pets are not disposable this will enrich their lives and help with the pet population and care.

More valuable input:

ARP www.adoptarescuepet.orgmentioned that when trying to find new avenues or trying to find new fosters, look to connect with senior groups. They have the time and love to commit to help foster dogs until they are placed.

PETCO www.petco.com has a program for both foundations and fosters and rescuers. Just show your paper work and a coupon book that is filled with different discounts on food and services will be issued. Plus the referring foundation receives points which are redeemable and will provide the monetary, tangible and educational resources that will help them continue to make a difference in the lives of the companion animals in our nation. So please urge your foster parents and adopted families to take advantage of this program.

CLAW www.catsinclv.org  stepped up and said that any rescue or fosterer that needs help with food all they need to do is contact C.A.T.S., Inc. They have a donated warehouse that can be filled to the brim with pet food.

All of the rescues take donations of either monetary means and volunteers or food items and animal needs. If you have any information or questions there is a website that you can utilize www.vegasanimalrescue.com. This website is updated and devoted to the rescue community in Las Vegas!

Bo & DeeMo hopes that this was an informational luncheon and it helped to sit down and talk about and share ideas of what each rescue is facing. Everyone left with a bag donated by ARP and it was filled with all of the information from the luncheon attendees. Information on contact numbers, websites, emails and needs were included. Working together we are stronger than working alone. After all whether it is through spay and neutering, fostering or having a sanctuary the principle still stays the same, saving an animals life.

We are proposing a LARGE project:  One Sanctuary, Many Rescues, and One Location in Las Vegas Valley.  A physical address where all volunteers, Vets, Trainers, local businesses, Celebrity, and prospected adopting families can donate time, money, supplies, hold adoptions, get training for their new family members, hold events to benefit the organizations involved, and this model will be much easier to receive funding, grants, donations and is NO KILL!

No one can do this alone.  People like you are needed to take part using your expertise.  If you would like more information, please email us with any questions and all needed contact information.  We will also send you an Organization that is doing this very project in the USA.  Politicians, Law enforcement and our local animal lovers can all benefit from this, and thankfully welcome the idea with open arms.

To go green: All this information will be emailed to those who have a sincere interests in participating, putting in some hard work, being involved on the committee, all take help bring this to a reality.  Please be patient, everyone has other jobs and responsibilities and will take some time to get going.
